We Demand Fair Development! Stop the Incinerator!

We are not alone in not knowing about the incinerator in our own neighborhood

We have been canvassing the neighborhood asking community members if they knew about the plan to build the nations’ largest trash burning incinerator less than a mile away from our school. Almost no one had ever heard about the project and almost everyone had major concerns. We will keep learning and sharing what we uncover about this major human rights issue.

One sentiment that was shared repeatedly as we met with folks was the idea that Curtis Bay has always been a dumping ground. This is an idea that challenges us to think more deeply about issues that underlie this particular incinerator. Why are some communities treated as dumping grounds again and again? Why do some of us suffer more from pollution than others simply because of where we were born? How can our society aim for equity, democracy and human rights when fundamental inequities such as this are the norm?
